Week 3 of the college football season is now underway, and this is shaping up to be an immaculate array of sandwich games. At first glance, there are at least 10 games pitting notable programs against overmatched competition, sandwiched in between last week’s opponent and next week’s conference opener.
I’ll be delving into quite a few of those games later in the week when I unveil my favorite opportunities in this week’s betting market.
For now, I’m looking at some large college football spreads that I fear could grow even larger. If you’re interested in these games, you may want to bet them now, before the buy point becomes more unfavorable.
USC vs. Rutgers Prediction
I don’t think this number reflects the football we’ve seen so far this season. Rutgers got blown out by UMass and lost to Boston College last week.
While it is possible that Rutgers is just particularly vulnerable to New England-based teams, it seems more likely that the Scarlet Knights are simply the worst P4 team in college football this year.
With no homefield advantage to speak of, that puts Rutgers vastly behind USC, which looks like it’s on a playoff trajectory in the wake of Oregon’s early-season issues. Even on the East Coast, I don’t see a mid-20s point spread as sufficiently punitive to inhibit me from backing the very good team against the very bad team.
I expect this week’s USC football odds to continue to move toward -28 (or beyond) throughout the week.
Prediction: USC -24.5
North Dakota State vs. Sacramento State Prediction
One reason I liked Fresno State so much last week is that the market is not correctly commodifying just how bad Sacramento State is. So I’m not afraid to lay four touchdowns with NDSU – clearly a competent G6 team, as it turns out – against what could be the literal worst team in FBS.
Historically, laying a big number with North Dakota State can be safer than other teams, since the Bison are going to run the ball in the second half and jack up their winning margin.
To ensure you’re getting this at an even -28, and not any worse, I think this is worth playing now.
Prediction: North Dakota State -28
Early College Football Bets for Week 3
- USC -24.5
- NDSU -28
