JMU vs. App State: Prediction, Odds, Betting Preview

Odds Boost This Weekend

JMU might be leaving the Sun Belt, but the Dukes still have to play one more road game against old rival App State.

This year, that game comes courtesy of this week’s Thursday night showdown, with the game airing on ESPNU.

BetMGM has NCAA football odds available for all the Week 8 college football action.

JMU vs. App State: Prediction and Preview

JMU might have joined the Sun Belt in 2022, but this rivalry between Harrisonburg and Boone reaches back to both programs’ FCS days. The first game was played in Harrisonburg in 1980; the peak came in 2007, when App hosted JMU in a critical playoff game in Boone.

At the time, the Dukes and Mountaineers accounted for the previous three FCS national titles. App State won 28-27 and ultimately won another championship. The next year, JMU won a regular-season revenge game in Harrisonburg, 35-32.

That intensity has carried over into FBS, with both teams pulling surprising upsets and shocking road victories. With the exception of last year’s 58-10 drubbing, every game since 2022 has been a one-score affair. It’s a classic rivalry dynamic.

Entering Week 8, JMU is one of the last remaining undefeated teams in FBS college football. As of this week, the Dukes are the favorite to get the nod as the G6 team most likely to play in the 2026 College Football Playoff.

That surging sentiment for JMU football odds is a big reason why the point spread is so one-sided in favor of the Dukes, even with the game in Boone.

On the field, App State hasn’t been terribly efficient in the run game, generating -0.11 EPA per rush. But App State did play one of its best games of the season in Week 7 at Coastal Carolina, rushing for 4.9 yards per rush in a much-needed conference win. JMU’s run defense is good, but it’s not unbeatably good like it has been in recent seasons, so App State may be able to recreate that success on the ground on Thursday night.

App State’s best path to an upset will be via its passing game, taking advantage of a JMU defense that’s allowed plenty of explosives and coverage gaps this year. Starting quarterback Malachi Singleton has been hurt this year, so App State backup Henry Hasselbeck – son of Matt Hasselbeck – has taken many snaps over the last few weeks.

JMU can win by scoring early, quieting the crowd, and using its strong defense and special teams to win field position and control the flow of the game.

JMU vs. App State Prediction

I am predicting an Appalachian State cover for Thursday night.

This rivalry game is typically competitive, and JMU looked beatable in its last Sun Belt road game at Georgia Southern. A road win of 12 points or more would be pretty out of character for this series.

Beyond that, JMU announced a conference move out of the Sun Belt last week, and you can bet that everyone in Boone will be fired up to give the Dukes a parting gift to remember them by.

Given the differences in the programs right now, this game feels like App State’s Super Bowl. I would take the points and consider a moneyline sprinkle.

Prediction: App State +11; Lean App State +340
