By this point in the summer, I’ve had ample opportunity to pick through every last corner of the college football futures market. As usual, my favorites are the college football win totals market and the odds to make the 2026 College Football Playoff.
College football has nearly 140 teams by now, and so there are inevitably numbers I like and numbers I hate. (For more on the former, check out my analysis of the Fresno State football odds for 2026. TLDR: I’m a big fan.)
One of the markets I do not understand this year is South Florida. The Bulls are coming off a banner year where they surged out to playoff favorite status, but they didn’t quite get the results they needed in late-season road games against key conference opponents.Â
Losses at Memphis and Navy removed USF from the CFP discussion. Rumors swirled that head coach Alex Golesh was distracted with interviews for his next job.
Did that actually happen? I don’t know. What did come to pass is Golesh took the open job at Auburn after the season ended, and he brought quarterback Byrum Brown and other contributors with him.Â
South Florida responded by hiring Brian Hartline as a first-time head coach and will be in something of a rebuild. And while there’s no doubt the American has some easy wins at the bottom of the conference, this is still a program that hadn’t previously won at least nine games since 2017.Â
For a team like this, you might expect a modest win total – say, 6.5. Maybe even 7.5.
Instead, South Florida football odds are quite high, as though nothing has changed from last season. The win total is 8.5, asking the market if the Bulls can repeat last year’s 9-3 regular-season campaign.
And … I mean, no? Probably not?Â
South Florida’s confusing market extends to my G6 playoff tracker, where the Bulls are considered one of the top preseason competitors for the guaranteed playoff spot. Again, I’m not trying to run USF down here, but I just don’t see how that makes any sense in what is plainly a setup year.Â
As for me, I’ll stick to the under 8.5. South Florida’s early games against Army and UTSA look like major trouble spots, and the late-season game against Memphis is a schedule nightmare. The game is in Tampa, but USF has only six days to prepare. The Tigers will be coming off a bye.Â
In my book, I’m counting that as three losses right there. All I need to find is one more somewhere else.Â
That’s a strong bet in my book, even at -140. That’s why I included it in my favorite college football futures bets of the summer.
