Ryder Cup Odds & Ryder Cup Parlays
Ryder Cup captains Steve Stricker and Padraig Harrington have unexpectedly long evaluation periods in selecting their teams for the 2021 Ryder Cup, as do bettors in breaking down Ryder Cup betting odds.
The Ryder Cup began as a biennial, odd-year event in 1927. Even when the Second World War forced the cancellation of four straight Ryder Cups from 1939-45, it continued as an odd-year event in 1947 and remained such until the September 11 attacks forced a one-year postponement to 2002. The tournament was played again in 2004 and kept an even-year schedule until the COVID-19 pandemic forced the 2020 Ryder Cup into 2021 and back to an odd-year event. Now scheduled for late September at Whistling Straits, the tournament will be one of the last remaining golf betting opportunities of the season.
“We just thought it was in the best interest of the team to put our best team forward, to give us that flexibility to get the pairings that we feel are best, to get the guys that are playing well and maybe guys that suit that course better than some other guys,” Stricker said in August. “It gives us a tremendous amount of flexibility, and it was a decision amongst all of us that was a good one and a proper one, and we’re sticking with it.”
The postponement did not reset the qualifying, however. Instead of a typical two-year qualifying period, the 2021 Ryder Cup has a three-year qualifying period that began at the start of the 2019 season and will carry through the BMW Championship. Xander Schauffele, for example, was 10th in the points standings last September when the Ryder Cup was originally scheduled to be played, four spots outside the line for automatic qualifiers. While he could’ve – and likely would’ve – been one of Stricker’s six captain’s picks, he wasn’t guaranteed a spot. Schauffele now has until late August to climb the points standings and guarantee a spot on a United States team.
