When Did Gregg Popovich Start Coaching the San Antonio Spurs?

Gregg Popovich took over as the head coach of the Spurs midway through the 1996-97 season. Heโ€™s in his 27th season on the job and is the longest-tenured active coach among all four major US sports leagues.

In 1994, Popovich became the general manager and Vice President of Basketball Operations with the Spurs, where he was previously an assistant coach. He is also the president of Spurs basketball currently.

Gregg Popovich won five NBA championships with the Spurs in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014. Heโ€™s just one of five NBA coaches to win that many titles.

Although heโ€™s not a Coach of the Year odds frontrunner this season, Popovich has won the award three times (2003, 2012 and 2014).
