Indian Wells isn’t just one of the biggest American tennis tournaments of the year. The joint men’s and women’s draw, played in California from March 2-16, is one of the biggest draws of the entire international tour.
Only grand slams like Wimbledon and the U.S. Open are bigger in scale and grandeur.
Indian Wells is part of a popular back-to-back American swing of tournaments called the Sunshine Double, with the second leg coming later in March with the Miami Open.
You can imagine why players from all over the world are excited to spend a little time in California and Florida at the end of a long winter. The men’s and women’s brackets will each feature 96 players in the main draw.
But the weather isn’t the only upside to tournaments like Indian Wells – the large player pool and overall prestige of these 1000-point draws come with some pretty hefty prize purses, too.
This year, Indian Wells has confirmed a record $8,963,700 purse, with each singles winner taking home more than $1.2 million.
