  • Carlos Adames defends his WBC Interim Middleweight title against Julian Williams.
  • Carlos Adames is the heavy betting favorite at -450.
  • Julian Williams is the betting underdog at +350.

An interim title showdown will headline the boxing festivities inside the Armory in Minneapolis this Saturday, June 24, as Carlos Adames (22-1) defends his WBC Interim Middleweight title against Julian Williams (28-3-1). It will be Adames’ first defense of his belt after winning it in his previous fight in October 2022. The boxer out of Comendador, Dominican Republic, is the heavy betting favorite in online sports betting at -450.

Although both Adames and Williams are relatively new to the 160-pound division with less than five fights each, the former IBF and WBA Junior Middleweight champion, Williams, still comes in as the betting underdog at +350, because he already sustained more losses (three) than Adames (one). Additionally, Adames is coming off an impressive third-round knockout victory that awarded him the belt, while Williams scored a decision win in his middleweight debut.

Carlos Adames Recent Fight Result

Carlos Adames had a brief amateur career which saw him compete in various tournaments from 2012 to 2014, before turning pro in 2015. He instantly racked up 18 straight victories and captured multiple minor boxing titles such as the WBA Fedecaribe Welterweight title, WBA Fedelatin Welterweight title, North American Boxing Federation Super Welterweight title, and WBO NABO Super Welterweight title.

In November 2019, Adames received his first major title opportunity when he challenged Patrick Teixeira for the WBO Interim World Super Welterweight title, but he came up short and received the unanimous decision loss. Since then, the now-New York resident has strung up four successive victories, including his third-round knockout of Juan Macias Montiel in October 2022 to win the WBC Interim World Middleweight belt.

Julian Williams Recent Fight Results

Julian Williams is a 13-year boxing veteran who was undefeated in his first 24 fights, having won 22 (with 14 TKO/KOs), drawing one, and receiving a no-contest result. During this immaculate run, “J Rock” also bagged the WBC Continental Americas Super Welterweight title en route to his first world title opportunity in December 2016, where he challenged Jermall Charlo for the IBF World Super Welterweight title.

Following his first taste of defeat, Williams rebounded with a five-fight winning streak, and in doing so, he was able to win the IBF and WBA Junior Middleweight titles over Jarrett Hurd in May 2019. His reign was short-lived because he suffered back-to-back losses against Jeison Rosario and Vladimir Hernandez. The 33-year-old Philadelphia native has since moved up to the middleweight division and picked up a win against Rolando Wenceslao Mansilla.

Carlos Adames vs. Julian Williams: Fight Analysis

The tale of the tape between Carlos Adames and Julian Williams is almost identical, with only an inch of difference in height and reach. Their age difference and TKO/KO percentage are the other two categories that favor the defending champion. Adames is four years younger at 29 compared to Williams, who is 33 years old, and has a 20% higher finishing rate with 77% versus Williams’ 57%.

These middleweight stars are both fighting in an orthodox stance, with Adames carrying a better record of 22 wins and only one loss, while Williams has 28 wins, three losses, and one draw. The two also have similar styles of closing the distance and finding their power shots through punches that are exchanged inside the pocket.

Adames’ favorite technique includes powerful hook punches that target his opponent’s head and body. Although he is primarily fighting in an orthodox stance, the defending champion has the ability to switch southpaw accordingly in-fight to make his opponent guess his next move and find the best angle for his punches. This is especially effective when he fights orthodox boxers.

Besides the lethal and powerful hook shots from both his hands, the pride of the Dominican Republic also likes to launch a quick one-two punch combination whenever he advances. Because of this technique, he catches opponents off guard, instantly backing them up. The only caveat to Adames’ style is his defense, as he tends to be stationary after throwing his combinations, making him vulnerable to counterpunches.

On the other hand, Williams banks on the power he possesses in his right hand, which is responsible for 57% of his wins. Like Adames, Williams loves to engage inside close range. He mostly hunts for the head and body with his destructive uppercut and hook punches. He uses these power punches to hurt and corner his opponent onto the ropes.

Despite having destructive power, the former junior middleweight champion is compromised in speed and footwork because he has linear movement and isn’t quick on his feet, thus making him a vulnerable target. Williams is known for his stamina and durability, which he uses to wear down his opponents, particularly when they are tired out in the later rounds.

With all the cards being laid down, the most significant factor in this upcoming WBC Interim Middleweight showdown will be the speed and footwork of Adames because he can drain Williams with a barrage of punches and move out of the way immediately before he can throw any counter. Once the challenger is frustrated, he can go all out on his offense and pour down the combinations to potentially stop the fight.
