Kentucky Football Preview

It’s never easy to replace NFL draft picks, but Kentucky might fare okay this year, even in a loaded SEC.

Head coach Mark Stoops lured the return of former Los Angeles Rams assistant coach Liam Coen as offensive coordinator, and he successfully won the transfer of former NC State quarterback Devin Leary.

In 2022, the offensive line in front of Will Levis was pretty weak, creating just 3.3 ypc and allowing an SEC-worst 47 sacks. But UK brings in a nice set of transfers for 2023, including Marques Cox (Northern Illinois), Tanner Bowles (Alabama), and Courtland Ford (USC).

No one with realistic expectations projects Kentucky to top Georgia and win the SEC East. The conference schedule didn’t do Wildcats fans any favors, as they draw Alabama and Mississippi State from the West.

However, with a non-conference schedule of Ball State, Eastern Kentucky, Akron, and Louisville, this is a strong candidate for an over in the college football win totals market. Even if the Wildcats are blown out by Georgia, Tennessee, and Alabama, there are still plenty of wins here on this schedule for a solid team with good trench play.
