Nick Saban won his first national championship as Alabama head coach at the conclusion of the 2009 regular season, defeating Texas 37-21.
Saban’s ‘09 title kicked off a dynastic run unlike anything else in the history of college football. It’s carried throughout the opening decade of the College Football Playoff era.
Even after missing the playoff field this year, Saban and Alabama still have the most College Football Playoff appearances in all of FBS.
Nick Saban Teams Coached
Nick Saban is best-known for coaching stints at LSU (2000-04) and Alabama (2007-present), where he has won a combined seven national championships. It’s also well-known that he took a crack at coaching the NFL’s Miami Dolphins in the interim.
However, Saban also served as head coach at Toledo (1990) and Michigan State (1995-99). Prior to that, he worked as an assistant at several different schools, including Kent State, Ohio State, West Virginia, Syracuse and Navy.
In the NFL, Saban worked as defensive backs coach for the Houston Oilers in 1988-89 and defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns from 1991-94.
