  • DRS stands for Drag Reduction System in Formula 1.
  • The technology is used to help drivers increase speed and overtake competitors.
  • Drivers can only activate DRS in specific zones at each circuit.

DRS is a technology in Formula 1 that helps drivers increase speed to overtake competitors.ย

DRS, or drag reduction system, allows drivers to open a flap on the rear wing of the car. By opening that flap, drivers gain extra speed, usually down straights.ย

Organizers introduced the DRS technology prior to the 2011 season, but it is not without controversy. Some drivers say it reduces the skill needed for a successful overtake.ย

When can drivers activate this technology? Letโ€™s dive into the elements needed for drivers to utilize the drag reduction system.ย

How Does DRS Work in Formula 1?ย

For drivers to activate the drag reduction system, two essential criteria must be met.ย

First, drivers need to find themselves in a designated DRS zone.ย

Each circuit has a different number of zones. Monaco, for example, possesses only a single DRS zone while Canada and Austria carry two and three zones, respectively.ย

Another element needed for drivers to activate DRS? They must find themselves within a second of the driver in front.ย

By activating DRS, it gives the driver extra speed to help overtake the driver in front.ย

Worth noting โ€“ drivers defending a car that can activate DRS cannot do the same, unless thereโ€™s another car in front within a second.ย

If that occurs, it creates what is known as a โ€œDRS train.โ€
