The Blazers used the No. 7 pick on Donovan Clingan and traded the No. 14 pick to the Washington Wizards in a deal that landed them Deni Avdija.

Clingan provided a dominant interior defensive presence for UConn in back-to-back championship campaigns. However, injuries and stamina limited his minutes at the collegiate level, so it’s fair to question his immediate workload.

Avdija finished sixth in Most Improved Player voting last year, averaging 14.7 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 3.8 assists per game for the Wizards. He will be entering his fifth season in the NBA.

The Blazers might be the most apparent tanking team in the West until the Utah Jazz decide what to do with Lauri Markkanen this summer.

That could be a blessing for Portland. The West is too deep to contend, while the East has a handful of teams actively tanking to land a top rookie in next year’s loaded class.

With Cooper Flagg as the coveted prize, the Blazers are in a great position. They won’t have many easy wins on their schedule, as they focus on developing a young roster featuring second-year point guard Scoot Henderson.

The Blazers could challenge their franchise-worst record of 18-64 in 1971-72.
