NFL teams and players can purchase insurance for contracts they sign, in case of injuries for example, but they aren’t necessarily included with every contract.

Teams have bought insurance for players to cover themselves from potential risk. For example, the Broncos got an insurance policy for Peyton Manning that reportedly would’ve been $10 million to cover them in case Manning missed the 2014 season because of a non-neck related injury suffered at some point the year before. Manning’s neck had been surgically fixed prior to that.

Players have also bought insurance, even at the college level. This served as a safety net in case they’re injured before they became professionals and that ailment affects their draft stock and therefore the potential value of their first pro contracts.
