In January 2014, St. Louis Rams’ owner Stan Kroenke purchased 60 acres of land north of Hollywood Park Racetrack in Inglewood, Calif. Kroenke’s intention was to build a multibillion-dollar stadium for the Rams upon moving the team to the Los Angeles metropolitan area.
Six years later, Kroenke’s intention was completed in the form a $5-billion stadium five miles west of Los Angeles International Airport.
When Was SoFi Stadium Built?
SoFi Stadium officially opened on Sept. 8, 2020, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony five days before the Los Angeles Rams hosted the Dallas Cowboys in Week 1 of the 2020 NFL season.
The stadium’s opening came six years after Kroenke purchased the land and nearly four years after construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony on Nov. 17, 2016. It’s the largest stadium in the NFL by expandable capacity (100,240) but sits behind 11 other stadiums for standard capacity (70,000).
SoFi Stadium Events
In addition to being the home of the Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, SoFi Stadium has hosted and is scheduled to host some of the biggest sporting events in the world.
The stadium hosted Super Bowl LVI in February 2022 and will host the College Football Playoff National Championship on Jan. 9, 2023. It’s also scheduled to host matches for the 2026 World Cup and 2028 Summer Olympics, including the opening and closing ceremonies.
