There are only a handful of typical outcomes for any given plate appearance in baseball. One of them is a base on balls (walk), where the batter advances to first base after seeing four called balls.
It’s helpful to think of a base on balls as a survived plate appearance, where the batter is awarded first base for surviving the at-bat without striking out or unsuccessfully putting the ball into play.
When a batter is intentionally walked, that is often scored as an IBB, rather than a BB.
