The Phoenix Suns are staring down a potential breakup following a disappointing 2024-25 campaign.

After being a trendy dark horse pick in the Western Conference, the Suns somehow missed the play-in tournament. Something has to change for a team that once had so much hope following an NBA Finals appearance in 2021.

Kevin Durant, who will turn 37 next year, stands out as a valuable trade asset this offseason. The Suns considered trading him at the deadline, and there may be numerous suitors this summer for anyone looking to make one move to elevate their chances next year.

So, where will Durantโ€™s next chapter take place?

Kevin Durant Next Team Odds & Favorites

The BetMGM online sportsbook doesnโ€™t provide odds on Durantโ€™s next team, but itโ€™s not too difficult to evaluate which squads may be interested this offseason.

The team that trades for Durant will likely do so after coming up short in the playoffs, hoping his addition could serve as the final piece of a championship roster.

As a result, Iโ€™d consider these five teams as the favorites to trade for Durant:

  • Oklahoma City Thunder
  • Houston Rockets
  • Minnesota Timberwolves
  • New York Knicks
  • Miami Heat

The Thunder are the Western Conference favorites entering the postseason, but could be motivated to make some changes if they donโ€™t reach the NBA Finals. A reunion with Durant could be just what this team needs (a No. 2 scorer behind Shai Gilgeous-Alexander), and Oklahoma City certainly has the assets to win any sweepstakes.

Houston, the No. 2 seed in the West, lacks offensive creativity in the half-court, which could lead to an early exit. If that happens, the Rockets also have plenty of assets to make a move in the offseason.

Anthony Edwards has called Durant his goat, indicating heโ€™d be on board with KD as a teammate if Minnesota were interested in building a championship team around its young star.

The Knicks might be motivated to make a move if it becomes clear that they lack the same level of talent as the Boston Celtics and Cleveland Cavaliers in the East.

The Heat have always pursued stars, but now more than ever after trading away Jimmy Butler at the deadline.

Kevin Durant Next Team Prediction: Where Will KD End Up?

Entering the postseason, the Timberwolves are my pick to trade for Durant this summer.

Part of that logic actually comes from my belief in Minnesota. The Timberwolves made the Western Conference finals last year and could have another deep run this postseason. But if they canโ€™t get through this gauntlet of a conference again, I could see the front office being aggressive.

The Wolves have already demonstrated a willingness to make changes, trading Karl-Anthony Towns for Julius Randle in the days leading up to the 2024-25 regular season. There were initial growing pains, but Minnesota has been one of the stronger teams in the league since March 1.

The Timberwolves were one of the teams that made a late push for Durant at this yearโ€™s deadline, so the interest is certainly there. And it makes so much sense on paper.

In an era where stars can force themselves out of situations, keeping Edwards happy should be Minnesotaโ€™s primary focus. Heโ€™s repeatedly mentioned how much he enjoyed playing with Durant in the Olympics.

It also makes sense from a personnel standpoint. The Timberwolves need a secondary scorer with opposing teams blitzing Edwards more than ever. Durantโ€™s presence would drastically improve Minnesotaโ€™s half-court offense.

This move would make everyone happy and vault the Wolves into championship contention.

Kevin Durant Contract

According to Spotrac, Durant will have a cap hit of $54,708,609 during the 2025-26 season. He would be an unrestricted free agent in 2026.

Kevin Durantโ€™s Teams

Here are all the teams Kevin Durant has played for since being drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft:

  • Seattle SuperSonics (2007-08)
  • Oklahoma City Thunder (2008-16)
  • Golden State Warriors (2016-19)
  • Brooklyn Nets (2020-23)
  • Phoenix Suns (2023-25)
