The NIT, or National Invitation Tournament, is a postseason college basketball tournament that features good teams who just missed out on being selected for the bigger NCAA Tournament.

The NIT includes 32 teams, many of which would have been given March Madness bids if they had just won another game or two.

Unlike the NCAA Tournament, where games are played at neutral sites, the early-round NIT games are hosted by schools.ย

Historically, the NIT championship was held at Madison Square Garden in New York. However, the NIT began moving the final rounds to different venues around the United States on a year-to-year basis starting with the 2023 edition.ย

In 2025, the NIT Final Four is scheduled for Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Technically, the NIT is older than the NCAA Tournament. In the early 20th century, the NIT was considered the more popular postseason tournament. That changed in the 1950s when NCAA Tournament expansion increased the number of teams tapped for inclusion.ย
