The origins of the NFL date back to 1920, but the inception of postseason play began in 1933. For 33 years, the NFL playoffs consisted of one game featuring the two division winners. In 1967, the league expanded its playoff field to a four-team single-elimination tournament and three years later expanded to eight.
A steady progression of playoff expansion evolved to ten in 1978, twelve in 1990, and eventually to the current format of 14 in 2020, allowing more Super Bowl competition and opportunity for NFL playoff odds.
The Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers have the most playoff appearances in league history with 33 apiece. Green Bay has won 13 league championships, the most in the NFL. In the NFL’s modern era, the New England Patriots have dominated the playoff scene and NFL odds with 17 appearances since 2000 and currently hold the longest active consecutive playoff streak with 11 appearances starting in 2009-10. The Patriots also hold the record for most playoff wins all-time at 37.
The Kansas City Chiefs have made the playoffs the last six seasons, tying their franchise-record, as they reign as one of the most dominant teams in the league right now. The New Orleans Saints set a new franchise-record on consecutive playoff appearances with four in a row dating back to the 2017 season.
