- Teams featured on “Hard Knocks” have a winning record against the spread.
- This year’s team, the Lions, have +12500 NFL odds to win the Super Bowl.
Hype has been surrounding the Detroit Lions after signs of progress last year and impressive moves in the offseason. It’s only picked up with the airing of HBO’s “Hard Knocks” show, which is featuring the Lions this year.
Recent history shows teams on “Hard Knocks” have a decent amount of success against the spread in that season. The Lions have Super Bowl odds of +12500 and the third-best NFC North odds of +850.
Hard Knocks History: ATS Records
In the last 10 years, teams on “Hard Knocks” are 93-79-5 against the spread during the regular season. That’s a 54% win percentage.
Only three of those teams had a losing record ATS. None have had a losing record since the 2016 Rams.
Last season, the Dallas Cowboys were 13-4 against the spread. The year before, the Chargers and Rams were 9-7 ATS.
That trend doesn’t necessarily correlate during the preseason, the time during which HBO documents these franchises. According to Matthew Freedman, director of content at FantasyPros and BettingPros, “Hard Knocks” teams are 21-31 ATS during the preseason since 2007.
Since the 2007 reboot of Hard Knocks, the featured teams have the following preseason betting records:
– ATS: 21-31
– O/U: 17-34-1
Someone had to do the dirty work. I wouldn't call myself a hero.

The Lions are 4.5-point underdogs to start the season against the Philadelphia Eagles. While that could be a loss, they have +250 odds of winning more than eight games.
Detroit’s odds of making the playoffs are +350. This is after adding edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson and wide receiver Jameson Williams, two of the most talented players at their positions, in this year’s draft.
