Jameis Winston signed a one-year deal with New Orleans, returning as Derek Carr’s backup for 2023. Winston was set to make $12,800,000 in base salary for the final year of a two-year extension. Instead, the Saints offered him an adjusted contract worth just $4,000,000.

Winston signed the one-year extension on March 13, 2023. It is worth $4,000,000, including a 2,835,000 signing bonus with $4,000,000 guaranteed.

In 2023, the quarterback will have a base salary of $1,165,000. His contract includes incentives that can add up to an additional $4,000,000.

The 29-year-old will carry a cap hit of $4,532,000 in 2023. His contract has a dead cap value of $4,000,000.

Jameis Winston Potential Extension

Winston has struggled to stay healthy in what was once a promising career. 

Now with the Saints for three years, the former first-overall pick has only started 10 games. He has completed 61% of his passes for 2,103 yards and 18 touchdowns, while recording eight interceptions.

Now, Winston will have to play backup to a motivated Carr. It is hard to see him returning to his former level and even harder seeing him overtake Carr for the starting position.

Set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2024, the 29-year-old still has time to prove his worth as a quarterback in the NFL. If he can stay healthy and bring consistency to his game, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer could return as a starter on a rebuilding team.
