The Los Angeles Rams kicker’s contract expired at the conclusion of this past season. In 2022, he signed a one-year contract with the Rams for $2,540,000. He is an unrestricted free agent entering the 2023 season.

Matt Gay Potential Extension

Gay was drafted by the Buccaneers in the fifth round of the 2019 draft. He signed a four-year contract with a price tag of $2,845,772. In 2020, he was unexpectedly cut from the team. He was picked up by the Rams shortly after, filling the gap left behind since the departure of Greg Zuerlein.

Since then, Gay has exceeded all expectations and become a consistent top-10 kicker. In his 41 regular season games with the team, he’s cashed 74 of 80 field goal attempts, including 17 of 23 from 50-plus yards. In the playoffs, he’s an excellent 12-for-14 in field goal attempts and 15-for-15 on extra-point tries. He’s a steady, reliable kicker that the Rams would be wise to keep around.

However, the Rams have a lot of unrestricted free agents about to hit the open market. They have a lot of needs to address this offseason. If they pay Gay somewhere in the ballpark of $5,000,000, which would be expected for a kicker of his caliber, it would close the door on other options.

They must weigh the tradeoff of signing a proven veteran with a high price tag or letting Gay walk and allocating those funds elsewhere.
