In the years before the NHL’s creation in 1917, professional hockey games were played with two, 30-minute periods. But in its more than century of existence, the NHL has always played games with three 20-minute periods, each separated by an intermission.

How Long Are NHL Intermissions?

NHL intermissions are 15 minutes in length occurs after first and second periods, during which the ice is resurfaced.
