Two European hopefuls meet in a short rest spot on Saturday as Aston Villa hosts Newcastle United.
Villa scored three times in the second half to cruise against Southampton last weekend. They’ll face a midweek match against PSG on Tuesday before going for a fifth straight league win.
Newcastle also dominated the second half over the weekend on their way to a 4-1 win over Manchester United. With the win, Newcastle moved up to fifth in the league table.

Based on Aston Villa’s expected positive regression at home and Newcastle’s struggles against good teams, my Aston Villa vs Newcastle prediction is Aston Villa Draw, No Bet (-145).
Not since Matchday 2 against Arsenal has Villa dropped all three points at Villa Park. Over the last three years, Villa have lost only nine games outright at home.
They’ll arrive at Saturday’s fixture with a rest edge over Newcastle, who play a midweek fixture a day after Villa plays in the Champions League.
Even more problematic for Newcastle? The schedule forces travel while Villa play consecutive home matches on Tuesday and Saturday.
It’s also a chance to fade a Newcastle side that has struggled to win against the league’s best teams.
Excluding Wednesday’s match against Crystal Palace, Newcastle have seen 13 of their 17 wins this season come against teams 11th or worse.
Of the four remaining wins, three have come at home.
Plus, metrics rate Villa a major positive regression candidate at home. Entering Saturday’s match, Villa own a +8 goal differential compared to a +12.8 xGDiff at Villa Park, per fbref.com.
Newcastle own the EPL’s second-best road xGDiff per 90, but most of that success came against bad teams.
