UFC returns to Mexico on March 29, as ranked flyweight contenders Brandon Moreno and Steve Erceg headline the exciting card inside the Arena CDMX. This match could potentially produce the next title challenger.

Due to his credentials as the former UFC flyweight king, Moreno heads into the match as the betting favorite with -200 UFC odds. Meanwhile, Ercegโ€™s two-fight losing skid has contributed to his role as the +165 betting underdog in the match.

Brandon Moreno vs. Steve Erceg: Prediction

I predict that Moreno will get the unanimous decision win over Erceg because of his more well-rounded skills and superior grappling. His jiu-jitsu is going to be instrumental against the heavy-handed Australian contender.

Erceg showed the holes in his game when he fought well-rounded fighters with strong jiu-jitsu skills, and he was dominated by Alexandre Pantoja, who has a fighting style similar to Moreno. Additionally, the Aussie athlete was defeated by Kai Kara-France, who Moreno had previously defeated.

The 2-inch reach advantage of Moreno will be crucial in the striking exchanges. Although he hasnโ€™t implemented the grappling-heavy approach in his past two fights, where he only attempted a total of six takedowns, the Mexican still has elite-level BJJ that he can use.

โ€œAstroboyโ€ needs to keep the fight standing to give him the best shot of landing his powerful punches. Although he has decent grappling skills to fend off takedowns, his best shot remains in the striking exchanges.

Morenoโ€™s best route to victory is to bait Erceg into thinking they will have a striking match throughout five rounds. But once Erceg opens up and overextends, he can shoot for a takedown and work his way into a ground and pound or submission.

Brandon Moreno Recent Fight Results

Moreno was a WFF flyweight champion before he joined the UFC in 2016. He had a 3-2 win-loss card during his first stint in the promotion before getting cut in 2019. He captured the LFA title before returning to the UFC in September 2019.

The Mexican MMA superstar became a two-time UFC flyweight champion before losing his title to Pantoja in July 2023. Following that championship defeat, Moreno split his last two matches with a loss to Brandon Royval and a win over Amir Albazi.

Steve Erceg Recent Fight Results

Erceg was among the best flyweight prospects when the UFC signed him to a contract in 2023. He had a professional record of nine wins and one loss. He made his octagon debut in June 2023 against David Dvorak and won via unanimous decision.

Since that win, he split his last four fights, winning over Alessandro Costa and Matt Schnell while losing to Pantoja (for the UFC flyweight title) and Kara-France in his previous two outings.ย
