  • Tiffany Hayes begins as the betting favorite after winning 6POY last year.

After winning the WNBA Sixth Player of the Year award last year, Tiffany Hayes enters the 2025 season as the betting favorite to repeat.

Hayes won this award as a member of the Las Vegas Aces in her 12th WNBA season, averaging 9.5 points in 33 games. She received 38 of 67 votes from a national panel of sports writers and broadcasters.

If Hayes wants to replicate last yearโ€™s 6POY campaign, she must do so in a new role on a different team. Hayes signed with the Golden State Valkyries in the offseason, raising questions about her status as the favorite in this market.

Who Will Win WNBA Sixth Player of the Year in 2025?

Hayes begins as the betting favorite to win the WNBA Sixth Player of the Year award in 2025, trading at +300 odds for an implied probability of 25%.

Consider me highly skeptical of Hayesโ€™ ability to repeat as 6POY.

For one, it’s unclear what role Hayes will have after signing with the WNBAโ€™s newest expansion team this offseason. She might be the Valkyries’ best player, which certainly suggests she will start for them. They also have the lowest win total (8.5) entering the year.

Many of the top contenders in this market project to be starters or play on non-elite teams, which would go against the profile of recent 6POY winners. This award has typically gone to a player on one of the top squads in the league. The last time a 6POY winner wasnโ€™t on a team that finished in the top four in the league was 2014.

The top four teams in 2025 are the Liberty, Lynx, Aces, and Fever. That means Iโ€™m only focused on reserves for those franchises in this market.

An Aces player has won this award in five of the past six seasons, which would have made Cheyenne Parker-Tyus my pick at 50/1 odds. However, she will miss the season’s first three months due to pregnancy.

Dana Evans (+1400) is another Las Vegas reserve worthy of consideration in this market. Evans averaged 7.2 points per game with the Chicago Sky last year, but should have more open shots in this high-powered Aces’ offensive system.

Ultimately, I took a +2200 flier on New York Liberty guard Marine Johannรจs instead.

Johannรจs missed the 2024 campaign, but she finished fourth in 6POY voting in 2023. Her stats were better in 2022 when she averaged 10 points, 3.4 assists, and 1.7 rebounds. For context, the Sixth Player of the Year winner has averaged 17.46 PRA (points, rebounds, assists) over the last 10 years.

While Johannรจs will have to increase her numbers in her age-30 season, I think there is a chance the Liberty lean on her more to provide an offensive spark during the regular season. New York has to be careful with the workload of its starters, as it attempts to reach the WNBA Finals for a third straight season.

Johannรจs is one of the more exciting players in the league, and this is a chance for her to get recognized.

Prediction: Marine Johannรจs
