Typically, College Football Week 1 games follow one of two well-worn options: high-profile P5 showdowns or non-P5, tune-up openers.
Louisville and Georgia Tech are opting for a rare third avenue. With the Cardinals and Yellow Jackets now turned over to Jeff Brohm and Brent Key, respectively, the two ACC hopefuls are jumping straight into ACC conference play.
That means there will be no ease into the season for either team. The Cardinals’ Week 1 results will have a direct impact on Louisville football’s ACC championship odds.
Louisville vs. Georgia Tech Prediction
Thanks partly to Brent Key’s program continuity, I predict that Georgia Tech (+8) will cover its current eight-point spread against Louisville in Week 1.
Louisville may be the better team, and it almost certainly has a brighter future in the long term. But laying north of a touchdown in a road opener is a tough ask for a new head coach, and Georgia Tech has been a very successful dog since Key took over for Geoff Collins in the middle of last season.
