  • New York's win total (81.5) is its lowest preseason mark since the 2014 campaign.
  • The Mets are one of the more popular picks to miss the MLB playoffs despite their -185 price.

The New York Mets made the playoffs in 2022 before following up with a disappointing 75-87 campaign last season. They finished fourth in the National League East, while three of their division foes made the postseason.

Despite being among the top MLB teams with the highest payrolls, New York remains on the outside looking in within a competitive NL East ahead of the 2024 MLB season.

Mets Futures Odds

Win Total: 81.5
NL East: +1200
NL Pennant: +2800
World Series: +5000

MLB betting markets have lower expectations for the Mets compared to recent years.

New York hasn’t had futures odds this long since 2014, when it was +8500 to win the World Series, +4000 to clinch the NL, and +2500 to finish atop the NL East.

The team’s preseason win total was 74, marking the last time it was expected to finish below .500.

New York finished 79-83 in 2014 before reaching the World Series the following year.

The Mets do have a bright future, with a few promising prospects knocking on the door. Perhaps 2025 is their year to surprise.

Mets Offseason Moves

David Stearns is now president of baseball operations for the Mets after serving the same role with the Milwaukee Brewers between 2015-23. He spent his first offseason making several minor additions.

The Mets didn’t have any significant departures after trading away Max Scherzer, Justin Verlander, David Robertson, and Tommy Pham at last year’s deadline. Their plan is focused on the long-term outlook.

Luis Severino, Sean Manaea, and Adrian Houser are all expected to crack the original rotation to begin the season. Jake Diekman, Shintaro Fujinami, and Jorge López will add some depth to the bullpen, which ranked 22nd in ERA last year.

Mets 2024 Betting Prediction

Prediction: Mets to miss the playoffs (-185)

Pitcher Kodai Senga remains sidelined after a promising rookie season, where he posted a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts over 166 1/3 innings. Pete Alonso, who set the rookie home run record with 53 in 2019, could hit free agency next winter.

There is a chance that this season will get away from the Mets as they turn to the future.

Despite the vig, betting on the Mets to miss the playoffs makes the most sense. The -185 price tag has an implied probability of 64.9%, but FanGraphs only gives New York a 27.9% chance of making the postseason.

The Mets are one of the more popular MLB betting picks to miss the playoffs for a reason.
