  • Edwin Díaz tore his patellar tendon during the World Baseball Classic.
  • Rhys Hoskins tore his ACL during spring training.
  • Gavin Lux had season-ending knee surgery in March.

Injuries are an unfortunate reality of professional sports, and Major League Baseball is no exception. From shoulder and elbow injuries requiring Tommy John surgery to everyday strains landing stars on the IL, there’s always something keeping the strength and conditioning coaches employed.

Here are players ruled out for the entire 2023 season.

Edwin Díaz — Mets (Knee)

The New York Mets’ bullpen took a huge blow when Díaz injured his knee before the start of the 2023 season.

On March 15, Díaz was celebrating after Puerto Rico advanced to the World Baseball Classic quarterfinals when he suffered a full-thickness tear of his patellar tendon.

A day later, the Mets announced the two-time All-Star would undergo surgery and need about eight months of recovery, effectively ruling him out of the entire 2023 MLB season.

Rhys Hoskins — Phillies (Knee)

Hoskins suffered a non-contact injury during a spring training game on March 23. The Philadelphia Phillies later announced he tore his ACL and would require surgery, meaning his 2023 season was over before it started.

The first baseman is due to enter free agency at the end of the season, so it’ll be interesting to see if the Phillies offer Hoskins a contract extension.

Gavin Lux — Dodgers (Knee)

On Feb. 27, Lux’s knee buckled while running from second to third base during a spring training game. The Los Angeles Dodgers announced he suffered a torn ACL and sprained LCL and would undergo surgery.

With Lux out, Miguel Rojas is the Dodgers’ everyday shortstop this year.
