Unlike the previous two MLB seasons, there will not be a Field of Dreams Game in 2023.
In September 2022, an $80 million development project got underway at the Field of Dreams site. The construction includes a permanent 3,000-seat ballpark built around the MLB field, nine new fields for youth baseball and softball, team dorms, a fieldhouse, jogging trails, a boutique hotel, an RV park, and an outdoor amphitheater. Unfortunately, the site is closed until the project is completed, meaning the annual Field of Dreams Game will not be going ahead in 2023.
As of May 2023, Major League Baseball hasn’t announced any concrete plans for the next Field of Dreams Game. The development project at the site is being completed in phases and is expected to be entirely finished in 2025.
MLB Field of Dreams Game History
The inaugural Field of Dreams Game was held on Aug. 12, 2021, between the Chicago White Sox and New York Yankees. The game opened with Kevin Costner, the lead actor in the 1989 Field of Dreams film, emerging from the cornfield with the two teams. The White Sox won, 9-8, on a walk-off two-run homer by Tim Anderson, making for one hell of an exciting finish to the overwhelmingly successful event.
The second and most recent Field of Dreams Game was held on Aug. 11, 2022, between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. The Cubs won, 4-2, in front of a sellout crowd of 7,823 people.
