Hawks 2024-25 Betting Preview: Prediction, Roster Projection

The Atlanta Hawks look to rebound from their first losing season since 2020 but will have to do so after trading away Dejounte Murray.

The NBA odds market doesn’t think much of Atlanta’s chances this season.

The Hawks have finished under their win total in three straight seasons and have their lowest preseason over/under since 2020-21. This year’s win total is six games below last year’s mark.

Atlanta also hasn’t been longer than +700 to win the division since 2018-19.

The Hawks had the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft and traded away one of their best players, indicating they are more focused on a rebuild than contending for a playoff spot.

Atlanta broke up its backcourt combination of Trae Young and Murray, trading the latter player to the New Orleans Pelicans. The Hawks received Dyson Daniels, Larry Nance Jr., Cody Zeller, and two first-round picks in the deal.

The Hawks also used the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft on Zaccharie Risacher. Even in a weaker draft class, it was a surprising pick given Risacher projects to be a role player at the NBA level.

Prediction: Hawks to Miss Playoffs (-200)

I’m not really into what the Hawks have been doing this summer.

Risacher was a reach at No. 1, as he was lower in my NBA rookie rankings. Atlanta would have been better off trading the pick or selecting a player with more upside to surround Young with some help.

Speaking of which, the Hawks might live to regret trading away Murray. He averaged more than 20 points per game in his two seasons in Atlanta.

The Hawks’ odds of missing the playoffs (-200) are similar to their odds of reaching the Play-In Tournament (-250). I prefer the former, though it’s probably too rich to actually bet.

Oddsmakers clearly believe there isn’t much upside to this team.
