The Knicks had the best record in the NBA during the 1969-70 season. New York finished 60-22, earned the No. 1 seed in the East, and won the NBA Finals over Los Angeles.
Because the 1970 season took place prior to the NBA-ABA merger of 1976, it’s not a perfect parallel to the deeper competition of the modern league.
New York had the best record in the East (60-22) during the 1992-93 season, but Phoenix (62-20) had a slightly better record in the West.
The ’93 Knicks ultimately lost to Michael Jordan’s Bulls in the Eastern Conference finals.
