  • Malik Monk is the betting favorite to win this yearโ€™s award in 2024-25.

Minnesota Timberwolves center Naz Reid claimed last yearโ€™s NBA Sixth Man of the Year award, besting Sacramento Kings guard Malik Monk by 10 total points in votes. And itโ€™s a sign that voters might have changed their process regarding this award.

The 6MOY award has gone to a bucket-getting reserve on a good team for years. Over the last 15 seasons, the winner of this award has averaged 17.4 points per game on a team that averaged 52.1 wins.

During that span, Reidโ€™s 13.5 points per game was the lowest-scoring average among all winners. He and Malcolm Brogdon (2022-23 6MOY) are the only two players to average below 15 points per game since 2009-10.

But Reid and Brogdon played on top teams when they won their award. The Timberwolves won 56 games last year, while the Celtics posted 57 wins in the previous season. The last four players to win 6MOY have been on a team that won 52-plus games.

As a result, Iโ€™m changing how I bet this market. I will start with the teams projected to win 50-plus games based on preseason win totals, then identify which squads have reserves capable of producing at least 13.5 points per game.

With that in mind, hereโ€™s a look at the latest NBA odds and who might be the best bet to win this yearโ€™s award:

NBA Sixth Man of the Year Favorite

Malik Monk (+550)

Monk finished second to Reid in voting last year, despite averaging 15.4 points per game compared to Reidโ€™s clip of 13.5.ย

While the race was competitive, anyone who bet on Monk ultimately lost because the Kings missed the playoffs as a 46-win team, while the Timberwolves were the No. 3 seed in the West.

The Kings’ win total is 46.5 entering the year, so there is a chance that they will rebound and help Monk win this award. But Iโ€™m not willing to bet it at this price before the season when this market can feature plenty of movement throughout the year.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year Sleeper

Payton Pritchard (+10000)

For my long-shot pick, I was between Denver Nuggets guard Julian Strawther (+15000) and Boston Celtics guard Payton Pritchard. I chose the latter player with more experience.

Pritchard, 26, is entering his fifth NBA season for the defending champions. He did his part as a reserve during last yearโ€™s playoff run, including the series win over the Cleveland Cavaliers when he averaged 11.2 points and 22.6 minutes per game off the bench.

Pritchard would have to raise his scoring average from 9.6 points per game last year, which will be challenging given the usage of Bostonโ€™s top players. But I could see a Brogdon-style 6MOY campaign from Pritchard this season as a key reserve on the best team in the league, especially if Jrue Holiday (34) takes a step back or has less playing time in the regular season.

Itโ€™s my favorite and only bet in this market at this point.

NBA Sixth Man of the Year Prediction

Donte DiVincenzo (+1400)

I prefer to wait for a better sense of lineups before betting on this market. Still, I will target the eight teams with a win total in the 50s: Celtics, Mavericks, Nuggets, Bucks, Timberwolves, Knicks, Thunder, and 76ers.

Of those eight teams, itโ€™s hard not to like Donte DiVincenzoโ€™s case the most. The 27-year-old guard is expected to move back to the bench for New York, but that wonโ€™t prevent him from scoring due to his ability to hit from beyond the arc.

DiVincenzo averaged 15.5 points per game a season ago, hitting 3.5 triples on 8.7 attempts per contest.

DiVincenzo should be the favorite in this market, as Reid is the only player ahead of him on a team with a win total above 46.5. Heโ€™s certainly my pick to win this award entering the upcoming campaign.
