What Does -8 Spread Mean in NBA Betting?

If a team is -8 in NBA betting at BetMGM, they’re a favorite of eight points. Their opponent, the underdog, would be +8.

To cover the spread (-8), the favorite must win the game by at least nine points.

To cover the spread (+8), the underdog must lose by seven points or less or win the game.

Overtime is included in the final score that determines the spread outcome.

Example of -8 Spread in NBA Betting

Oklahoma City Thunder (-8, -105) at New Orleans Pelicans (+8, -115)

The Thunder are the road favorite (-8), and the Pelicans are the home underdog (+8).

If Oklahoma City wins by at least nine points, they cover. If New Orleans loses by seven points or less or wins the game, they cover the spread.

Here are some score examples:

Thunder 109, Pelicans 100: The Thunder win by nine points and cover the spread.

Thunder 140, Pelicans 132: The Thunder win by eight points and push.

Pelicans 120, Thunder 114: The Pelicans win by six points and cover the spread.

Payout for -8 Spread in NFL Betting

Boston Celtics (-8, -110) at Brooklyn Nets (+8, -110)

The odds beside the spread determine the payout. In this Celtics-Nets example, the odds for each spread (-8 and +8) are -110. The odds can vary for games; they could be +115, +100, -105, -110, or another value.

With -110 odds, a winning bet with a $50 stake would return $95.45 (including stake).

At -105 odds, a winning bet with a $50 stake would return $97.62 (including stake).

If a spread bet pushes, the stake is refunded.
