What Does -9 Spread Mean in NBA Betting?

If a team is -9 in NBA betting at BetMGM, they’re a favorite of nine points. Their opponent, the underdog, would be +9.

To cover the spread (-9), the favorite must win the game by at least 10 points.

To cover the spread (+9), the underdog must lose by eight points or less or win the game.

Overtime is included in the final score that determines the spread outcome.

Example of -9 Spread in NBA Betting

Los Angeles Clippers (-9, -105) at Portland Trail Blazers (+9, -115)

The Clippers are the road favorite (-9), and the Trail Blazers are the home underdog (+9).

If Los Angeles wins by at least 10 points, they cover. If Portland loses by eight points or less or wins the game, they cover the spread.

Here are some score examples:

Clippers 134, Trail Blazers 124: The Clippers win by 10 points and cover the spread.

Clippers 129, Trail Blazers 120: The Clippers win by nine points and push.

Trail Blazers 112, Clippers 101: The Trail Blazers win by 11 points and cover the spread.

Payout for -9 Spread in NFL Betting

New York Knicks (-9, -110) at Washington Wizards (+9, -110)

The odds beside the spread determine the payout. In this Knicks-Wizards example, the odds for each spread (-9 and +9) are -110. The odds can vary for games; they could be +115, +100, -105, -110, or another value.

With -110 odds, a winning bet with a $50 stake would return $95.45 (including stake).

At -105 odds, a winning bet with a $50 stake would return $97.62 (including stake).

If a spread bet pushes, the stake is refunded.
