The NBA odds market believes the Wizards will be one of the worst teams in the league this year.

The Brooklyn Nets (19.5) are the only team in the league with a lower projected win total than Washington. The Wizards had a win total of 24.5 last year before finishing with a 15-67 record.

They have finished under their preseason win total in back-to-back seasons.

The Wizards made three picks in the first round of this year’s draft, including a pair of lottery picks. 

They took big man Alex Sarr at No. 2, hoping he could immediately impact the defensive end. Guard Carlton “Bub” Carrington was drafted at No. 14 and certainly opened some eyes with his play during the NBA Summer League.

Washington also added veterans Jonas Valančiūnas and Malcolm Brogdon, but don’t be surprised if either player is moved for draft assets during the season.

Prediction: Carlton Carrington to Win Rookie of the Year (+5000)

Since draft night, Carrington has been my favorite NBA Rookie of the Year odds sleeper pick. I made the case for him as a +5000 long shot, and his odds have since dropped dramatically after an impressive showing in Summer League.

But this price is still tempting enough for me.

Carrington averaged 13.8 points and 4.1 assists per game in his lone collegiate season at Pittsburgh last year. He has an opportunity to put up plenty of counting stats on a team that doesn’t have much talent.

With Jordan Poole serving as Carrington’s only real obstacle in the backcourt, I expect him to have a solid role in his debut season.

While his odds of winning this award have been cut in half, don’t be surprised if Carrington’s price is even shorter by the start of the regular season.
