The worst record to ever make the NCAA Tournament is 11-18. Three different teams have made it to March Madness with this record over the years.ย

The first to do it was Florida International, who won the Atlantic Sun tournament in 1995 as the No. 8 seed in a conference tournament that only had eight teams in it.ย

UCF repeated a similar feat the following year, winning the A-SUN tournament title as the No. 6 seed. It, too, had an 11-18 record.

The next year, in 1997, Fairfield won the MAAC with the same 11-18 record.

Worst Conference Record To Make NCAA Tournament

West Virginia set the record for worst conference record by a power team in 2023 when it was selected as an at-large team with a 7-11 record in the vaunted Big 12.ย

At four games under .500 in conference play, the Mountaineers still made the field. And not even as a team in the First Four, either โ€“ they were a No. 9 seed! Thatโ€™s just how good the Big 12 is in some years.

The SEC may break this record in 2025 with an ultradeep league of potential NCAA Tournament teams. Some bubble teams, like Texas or Oklahoma, have only won about one-third of their league games.
