If you’re a fan of pro football – or even just online sports betting – there’s a good chance you woke up to some pretty dramatic news Friday.

Christian McCaffrey was traded to the San Francisco 49ers late Thursday night. Big news, since it’s the first time in years that McCaffrey will play for a competent offensive team (let alone one that’s live in the Super Bowl betting market).

Did the Panthers Trade Christian McCaffrey?

Yes, Christian McCaffrey was traded from Carolina to the 49ers late in the evening on Thursday, October 20, 2022.

Will Christian McCaffrey Play This Week?

Christian McCaffrey is hypothetically available to play this week against the Chiefs – particularly in high-leverage scoring opportunities, where he is likely to be most effective – but his understanding of the playbook and overall Shanahan offense will be minimal after 48 hours with the team.

Christian McCaffrey 49ers Jersey

There’s quite a bit of early speculation about which jersey Christian McCaffrey will wear for the 49ers. He wore No. 22 in Carolina, which is currently worn by San Francisco running back Jeff Wilson; he wore No. 5 in college, but Trey Lance has that number.

Christian McCaffrey is originally from Colorado, though he did attend college at Stanford, in northern California.

Where Did Christian McCaffrey Play College Football?

Christian McCaffrey famously played college football at Stanford University, where he was an all-time playmaker and Heisman Trophy finalist. His trade to the 49ers is a true Bay Area homecoming.

Christian McCaffrey Trade Details

The San Francisco 49ers acquired Christian McCaffrey, one of the NFL’s elite offensive stars, in exchange for their second, third and fourth-round draft picks in next year’s 2023 NFL Draft, in addition to a fifth-round pick from 2024.

Who Will Replace Christian McCaffrey?

The Panthers depth chart currently lists both D’Onta Foreman and Chuba Hubbard as the primary backup options at running back, which means NFL fans are likely to see some combination of the two of them from now on this season.

Foreman or Hubbard? Projecting D’onta Foreman’s Role in Carolina

D’onta Foreman has logged 12 carries to Chuba Hubbard’s six so far this season, so Foreman could have the edge over the younger Hubbard in the immediate aftermath of the Christian McCaffrey trade.

Robby Anderson Trade

This isn’t the first trade the Carolina front office has made this week, as the Panthers sent Robby Anderson to Arizona on Monday in exchange for a pair of late-round draft picks, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The trade came one day after a very visible conflict on the Carolina sidelines involving Anderson, his teammates and coaching staff.

Cam Akers Trade

Rumors are also swirling around embattled Rams running back Cam Akers, who appears to have played his snaps as a member of the Los Angeles Rams.

Perhaps Carolina could acquire a starting-caliber running back from L.A. on the cheap.
