Premier League Best Bets for Matchday 20

Matchday 20 features a Brighton side punching well above its weight and a relegation battle between Everton and Southampton.

Premier League odds have Liverpool as the favorites (+105) to win at Brighton’s Amex Stadium, while Everton is a marginal favorite (+120) at Goodison Park.

Brighton vs. Liverpool

Brighton and Liverpool will go head-to-head at 10:00 a.m. ET on Saturday morning. The Seagulls come into the game brimming with confidence, having won four of its last six EPL matches and sitting eighth in the table.

Kaoru Mitoma, Evan Ferguson, Solly March, and Pascal Grob each scored in Brighton’s 4-1 drubbing of Everton last time out. Manager Roberto De Zerbi will expect the same high standard that his team has shown since he took over at the helm, despite the tougher opponent.

Liverpool has won four of its last five EPL games, but the Reds are still struggling to replicate their 2019 title-winning form. Talismanic center-back Virgil Van Dijk was injured in Liverpool’s horrendous 3-1 loss to Brentford in their last game, and Jurgen Klopp will have to experiment with who is most likely to keep the Seagull’s attack at bay.

These two teams played to a 3-3 draw at Anfield the last time that they met, and I see a similar result at the Amex. Yes, Brighton is exceeding expectations at the moment, and they may drop off towards the end of the season, but most of the team had good training during the World Cup break.

The Liverpool players know they need to start putting together a string of good results if they are going to get into the Champions League places, but I feel like they lack confidence at the moment. 

The Reds will push for a goal and leave themselves vulnerable to Brighton’s excellent counterattack.

Everton vs. Southampton

Only three points separate Everton (18th) from Southampton (20th), with both clubs languishing in the relegation spots. 

Frank Lampard’s tenure at Goodison Park has been a rollercoaster, with his side drawing against an impressive Manchester City team at the end of 2022. However, the side is coming off of a humiliating 4-1 loss to Brighton and a 3-1 loss to Manchester United in the FA Cup.

Lampard knows that his job is in the balance here, and anything but three points could potentially have him fired. Luckily, the Toffees are playing at home against the Saints and will have their home support behind them. 

Everton didn’t play badly against Manchester United, with 42% of the possession and five shots on target. The concern comes on the defensive end. This team has allowed 17 goals in the last six games, despite having Jordan Pickford as keeper.

You’ll have to look all the way back to October 2022 to find Southampton’s last win in the Premier League. The club sacked popular manager Ralph Hasenhüttl in November after the 4-1 defeat to Newcastle. New manager Nathan Jones hasn’t fared much better either, and the Saints have lost their last five league games in a row.

There are only five points between Southampton at the bottom of the table and Nottingham Forest in 15th. However, a win here will dramatically improve the chances of getting out of the relegation zone before the end of the season.

The Saints come into this match with a little more confidence, having beaten Crystal Palace in the FA Cup. Similarly to Everton, Southampton has struggled on defense, and they’ve conceded 11 goals in the last six games, so they’ll really have to tighten up at the back if they want to walk away with any points here.

I see Everton winning this match by a narrow margin. Lampard could lose his job if they don’t get these points, so I think Everton has a little bit more to fight for in this game.
