Premier League Power Rankings

Nick Hennion @nickhennion Sep 16, 2024, 5:36 PM
  • Manchester City leads my preseason power rankings as title favorites.
  • Newcastle are a top-four team in spite of their seventh-place finish last year.
  • Despite finishing 16th last year, Brentford are higher in my rankings.

The Premier League season begins in one week! Below, bettors can find my preseason power rankings for all 20 clubs.ย

Additionally, be sure to check out the plethora of futures Premier League odds at the BetMGM online sportsbook.ย

Premier League Power Rankingsย

Tier 1: Title Contenders

  1. Manchester Cityย
  2. Arsenalย

Nothing has changed my opinion about this order through four matches. However, there could be a change in the rankings if Arsenal win against City this weekend.ย

The good news for Arsenal? Their defense remains outstanding. Through four matches, theyโ€™ve allowed only 2.1 post-shot expected goals, 1.3 fewer than Manchester City.

Tier 2: European Threats

3. Liverpoolย

4. Newcastle United

5. Chelsea

6. Aston Villaย

7. Tottenhamย

Iโ€™m not ready to downgrade Tottenham just yet. However, the next month could impact their standing.ย

Here are the next six for Spurs: Brentford, Manchester United, Brighton, West Ham, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa.ย

Depending on their results over that span, Spurs could see some movement in the rankings.

Tier 3: Solidly Mid-Table Squads

8. Brighton & Hove Albionย

9. Manchester Unitedย

10. Brentford

11. Bournemouth (+5 from season start)

12. Nottingham Forest (+2 from season start)

Bournemouth have come out of the gates strong, particularly at home.ย

Theyโ€™ve stood toe-to-toe with Newcastle United and Chelsea at the Vitality Stadium. Although theyโ€™re 0-1-1 (W-D-L) in those contests, they won the xG battle in both games.ย

I also want to call out Forest, who faced their first true test at Anfield on Matchday 4 and won 1-0.ย

The schedule was easy up until that point โ€” home to Bournemouth and Wolves, at Southampton โ€” but this could be a buy team in the future.

Tier 4: Solidly Bottom-Half Sidesย

13. West Ham United (-2 from season start)

14. Crystal Palace (-2 from season start)

15. Everton

16. Fulham

17. Wolvesย

Letโ€™s talk about Everton, who have yet to earn points this season. However, it comes without central defender Jarrad Branthewaite.ย

When Branthwaite returns, heโ€™s going to make Everton better immediately.ย

Plus, theyโ€™ve faced a brutal schedule to open the season, with three of their first four coming against teams vying for European spots.

Tier 5: The Newcomers

18. Leicester City (+2)

19. Ipswich Townย

20. Southampton (-2)

Southampton have taken the mantle of the worst Premier League team.ย

In three matches at 11v11, Southampton have yet to keep an opponent under two expected goals.ย

While Ipswich ran super lucky at Brighton on Matchday 4, their home performance against Fulham gives at least a glimmer of hope for the Tractor Boys.
