Premier League Power Rankings

  • Manchester City leads my preseason power rankings as title favorites.
  • Newcastle are a top-four team in spite of their seventh-place finish last year.
  • Despite finishing 16th last year, Brentford are higher in my rankings.

The Premier League season begins in one week! Below, bettors can find my preseason power rankings for all 20 clubs.ย

Additionally, be sure to check out the plethora of futures Premier League odds at the BetMGM online sportsbook.ย

Premier League Power Rankingsย

Tier 1: Title Contenders

  1. Manchester City (–)
  2. Arsenal (–)

Separating these clubs is quite difficult, especially given the confidence oddsmakers have in Arsenal to win the league.ย

But this remains a City team with the best manager and the best attacking 1-2 punch.

I rate the Arsenal defense higher, but Mikel Artetaโ€™s side has scored 33 goals over post-shot expected the last two seasons.ย

If regression comes in that department, Arsenalโ€™s title hopes could be dashed.ย

Tier 2: European Threats

3. Liverpool (–)

4. Newcastle United (–)

5. Chelsea (–)

6.ย Aston Villa (–)

7. Tottenham (–)

There’s a case for Tottenham to leap Aston Villa after a 4-0 win over Everton. However, my opinion is that win said more about Everton than it did about Spurs.

We’ll learn more about Spurs in the coming weeks. They travel to Newcastle on Matchday 3. After that match, Ange Postecoglou’s side next six matches come against Arsenal, Brentford, Manchester United, Brighton and West Ham.

How many points Spurs accumulate from those matches could affect their standing in my rankings.

Tier 3: Solidly Mid-Table Squads

8. Brighton & Hove Albion (–)

9. Manchester United (–)

10. Brentford (–)

11. West Ham United (–)

12. Bournemouth (+1)

Bournemouth continue their climb up the rankings after a strong showing against Newcastle. Couple that with Palace losing at home to West Ham, and they switch spots in my rankings.

Although the match finished 1-1, Bournemouth won the expected goals battle 2.26 to 1.69. The psxG battle favored Newcastle 2.65 to 1.12, but it’s largely because of a 0.03 xG/0.88 psxG chance.

That won’t occur as frequently against below-average EPL teams. Accordingly, Bournemouth is going to be a buy candidate in subsequent matches, especially as a favorite.

Tier 4: Solidly Bottom-Half Sidesย

13. Crystal Palace (-1)

14. Nottingham Forest (+1)

15. Fulham (+1)

16. Everton (-2)

17. Wolves (–)

The slide continues for Crystal Palace, who fell 2-0 at home to West Ham United.

Although the expected goals battle finished even, Palace continues to struggle to put shots on target. Only two of their 14 shots found the target for a psxG tally of 0.26.

Across two matches, the Eagles have managed only 1.3 psxG. Those offensive struggles are enough to downgrade them this week.

Tier 5: The Newcomers

18. Leicester City (–)

19. Southampton (–)

20. Ipswich Town (–)
