  • Canelo Álvarez returns to action as he defends his undisputed super middleweight crown against the challenge of Jaime Munguía.
  • Álvarez is the heavy betting favorite at -500.
  • Munguía is the considerable betting underdog at +400.

The Cinco De Mayo boxing event this year will be fittingly headlined by two Mexican fighters who will fight for the undisputed super middleweight crown. Canelo Álvarez defends all his 167-pound world titles against the undefeated challenger Jaime Munguía this Saturday inside the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Because of his dominance in the division for almost six years now, Álvarez remains a top bet in boxing odds, as he is the -500 betting favorite to get another victory. On the other hand, despite his perfect professional record, Munguía is tagged as the considerable betting underdog with +400 odds.

Canelo Alvarez Recent Fight Results

Álvarez is a four-time division boxing world champion who currently rides a three-fight win streak after beating Gennadiy Golovkin, John Ryder, and most recently, Jermell Charlo to prove that he’s the best super middleweight boxer in the world.

He is considered one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world and has only been defeated twice in his professional career. Those losses were courtesy of Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Dmitry Bivol. Álvarez holds an incredible record of 60 wins (39 TKO/KOs), two losses, and two draws.

Jaime Munguia Recent Fight Results

Munguía is an undefeated up-and-coming boxing star. The WBO World Super Welterweight title is the only major title he has won, but he has collected multiple minor boxing titles. His most recent victory was against Ryder via seventh-round TKO in January to retain his WBC Silver Super Middleweight title.

That victory by the 27-year-old boxing star was enough to earn a showdown with Álvarez. Munguía is a hard-punching boxer with a one-shot knockout power, and his 79% TKO/KO percentage is proof of that. He looks to score the biggest win of his career against Álvarez with a massive upset on Saturday.

Canelo Alvarez vs. Jaime Munguia: Fight Analysis

The tale of the tape between Álvarez and Munguía mostly favors the latter because he’ll have 3 inches (6 feet against 5-foot-8) of height and 1.5 inches (72 inches versus 70.5 inches) of reach advantage over the former. Additionally, Munguía will be six years younger than Álvarez, although it can be a disadvantage for him.

That six-year age difference could also spell the difference in experience, especially when fighting at the highest level of boxing. Since winning his first world title in 2012, Álvarez has been fighting some of the best boxers for over 12 years.

Although he has a perfect record of 43-0 and a higher TKO/KO percentage of 79%, Munguía hasn’t fought the calibre that Álvarez did. His two most notable opponents by far were Sergiy Derevyanchenko and Ryder.

Both fighters take a different approach to fighting. Álvarez is a more technical, cerebral, and counterpunching machine who reads his opponents’ patterns and rhythms well. He often studies and assesses them during the opening phases of a fight before he exploits their weaknesses.

On the other hand, Munguía is a volume puncher with a decent combination that overwhelms his opposition. These punches are also thrown with heavy hands, meaning they will likely inflict significant damage when they land. However, these combinations are usually repetitive and limited to 1-2-3s.

If Munguía doesn’t come up with other combinations to attack Álvarez on fight night, it could be a short night for him because the defending champion is really good at finding the counterpunch that folds his foes down the mat. Álvarez should easily read the challenger’s 1-2-3 combination and come up with a variety of counters to secure the stoppage victory.
