David Benavidez vs. David Morrell Jr.: Prediction
I predict that Benavidez will win via unanimous decision over Morrell Jr. because he has more extensive experience fighting much tougher competition and headlining major fights such as this.
This is not to say that Morrell Jr. is not an elite fighter, but he hasnโt fought other top contenders in the weight class, and he has only 11 fights in his professional career. Furthermore, Benavidez is long considered to be a worthy opponent for pound-for-pound great Canelo Alvarez.
Heading into the match, both world champions have a high TKO/KO percentage of over 80% on their resumes, which is solid evidence of their punching power, which can put any opponent to sleep with a single blow.
In terms of physical attributes, Benavidez will enjoy an inch height advantage over Morrell Jr., but Morrell Jr. will have an edge of 4 inches over Benavidez. This will be a crucial factor in the match because it could determine their respective approaches.
Benavidez might need to close the distance against Morrell Jr. and fight on close range to nullify his edge in reach, and Morrell Jr. can choose to stay on the outside and maximize his reach to land punches from range.
However, I still believe that Benavidezโs experience will power him into a convincing decision nod from the judges, much like what he did on his previous outing. A win for him could put him in line for a potential shot against Alvarez or face the winner of the Artur Beterbiev-Dmitry Bivol super fight.
