What’s the MLB 40-Man Roster?

An MLB team’s 40-man roster includes a combination of players on the 26-man roster, the 7-, 10-, and 15-day injured lists, the paternity leave list, the bereavement/family medical emergency list, and some minor league players. A player must be on the 40-man roster in order for the team to add them to the 26-man (active) roster.

Players on a team’s 40-man roster are protected from being selected by another club in the yearly Rule 5 Draft hosted at the Winter Meetings.

What Happens When an MLB Player Is Removed From the 40-Man Roster?

If a team with a full 40-man roster wants to promote a minor league player that is not on the 40-man roster, it must first remove a player from the 40-man roster to make space. In order to do this, the player being removed must be designated for assignment, traded, released, or transferred to the 60-day injured list.
