Last Time All Four No. 1 Seeds Made the Sweet 16

The last time all four No. 1 seeds made the Sweet 16 was 2024. All four No. 1 seeds have now made the Sweet 16 in two consecutive seasons.ย

No. 1 seeds UConn, North Carolina, Houston, and Purdue all advanced to the second round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament.ย

Itโ€™s not unusual for a No. 1 seed to be upset in one of its first two games of the NCAA Tournament. In recent years, those upsets have sometimes even come in the first round with unprecedented 16-over-1 results in the first round.ย

UMBCโ€™s 2018 upset of Virginia, as well as Fairleigh Dickinsonโ€™s 2023 upset of Purdue, both made the list of the biggest March Madness upsets of all time.

But while some No. 1 seeds fall early, itโ€™s just as common over the last decade that all four No. 1 seeds advance to the second week of the tournament. In addition to 2024 and 2025, this also happened in 2019 and 2016.

The regional venues are where No. 1 seeds are historically under major threat for the first time. For more on what I think will happen during this yearโ€™s tournament, you can check out my Sweet 16 predictions and bets.ย
