The last time a member of the SEC won a men’s college basketball national championship was 2025.
The SEC posted a truly dominant season as a conference during the 2024-25 season, so it felt only right that one of its members claimed the national title.
That honor went to the Florida Gators, who proved immortal after mounting late comebacks in game after game. As a result, Florida coach Todd Golden added his name to the elite club of active college basketball coaches with a national championship.
SEC National Championship History
While Kentucky is one of the verified blue bloods of the sport, the SEC at large is not generally known for its prowess in men’s college hoops. Kentucky and Florida are the only two programs that have played in the national championship game this century.
Billy Donovan’s Florida teams were the last back-to-back college basketball national champions until UConn did it in 2023-24.
Prior to that, you’d have to go back to Arkansas in the mid-1990s. The Razorbacks won the title in 1994 and were the national runner-up in 1995.
In women’s college basketball, South Carolina won the SEC a national championship in 2024.
