The last time a member of the SEC won a menโs college basketball national championship was 2012.
One of John Calipariโs earliest one-and-done rosters at Kentucky cut down the nets at the end of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.ย
This was a classic stacked roster of playmakers for Calipari, led by freshman big Anthony Davis. Terrence Jones, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Doron Lamb, and Marquis Teague filled out the remainder of the starting five.
SEC National Championship History
While Kentucky is one of the verified blue bloods of the sport, the SEC at large is not generally known for its prowess in menโs college hoops. Kentucky and Florida are the only two programs that have played in the national championship game this century.
Billy Donovanโs Florida teams were the last back-to-back college basketball national champions until UConn did it in 2023-24.
Prior to that, youโd have to go back to Arkansas in the mid-1990s. The Razorbacks won the title in 1994 and were the national runner-up in 1995.ย
In womenโs college basketball, South Carolina won the SEC a national championship in 2024.
