When Was the Last Time the SEC Won a College Basketball National Championship?

Kentucky head coach John Calipari yells instructions during the first half of an NCAA college basketball game against LSU in the second round of the 2012 Southeastern Conference tournament at the New Orleans Arena in New Orleans, Friday, March 9, 2012. Calipari is stepping down as Kentucky's men's basketball coach after 15 years, saying Tuesday, April 9, 2024, on social media that the โ€œprogram probably needs to hear another voiceโ€ amid reports that he's closing in on a deal with Arkansas to take over that Southeastern Conference program.

The last time a member of the SEC won a menโ€™s college basketball national championship was 2012.

One of John Calipariโ€™s earliest one-and-done rosters at Kentucky cut down the nets at the end of the 2012 NCAA Tournament.ย

This was a classic stacked roster of playmakers for Calipari, led by freshman big Anthony Davis. Terrence Jones, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Doron Lamb, and Marquis Teague filled out the remainder of the starting five.

SEC National Championship History

While Kentucky is one of the verified blue bloods of the sport, the SEC at large is not generally known for its prowess in menโ€™s college hoops. Kentucky and Florida are the only two programs that have played in the national championship game this century.

Billy Donovanโ€™s Florida teams were the last back-to-back college basketball national champions until UConn did it in 2023-24.

Prior to that, youโ€™d have to go back to Arkansas in the mid-1990s. The Razorbacks won the title in 1994 and were the national runner-up in 1995.ย

In womenโ€™s college basketball, South Carolina won the SEC a national championship in 2024.
