Purdue head coach Matt Painter has a 17-15 career record in the NCAA Tournament. Most recently, Painter and the Boilermakers lost to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the 2023 tournament.

It was the biggest upset in March Madness history.

In his 19 full seasons as a Division I head coach, Matt Painter has made the NCAA Tournament 16 times, 15 at Purdue and once at Soutehrn Illinois.

Purdue has been upset by higher seeds in six of its last 10 appearances. Painter has made one Elite Eight during his time at Purdue, in 2019. He has advanced to the second week of the tournament six times: in 2009, 2010, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022.

Painter and the Boilermakers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament nearly every season dating back to 2007. The lone exceptions are a two-year dip from 2012-14, as well as 2020, when the tournament was canceled.
