Purdue head coach Matt Painter has a 22-16 career record in the NCAA Tournament.
Painter and Purdue are commonly known for disappointing NCAA Tournament exits. Most famously, the Boilermakers were upset by No. 16 seed Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the 2023 tournament. It was among the biggest upsets in March Madness history.
In his 21 full seasons as a Division I head coach, Painter has made the NCAA Tournament 17 times – 16 at Purdue and once at Southern Illinois.
Purdue has been upset by higher seeds in six of its last 11 appearances.
Painter has now made two Elite Eights during his time at Purdue. The first was in 2019, while the second was during Purdue’s 2024 run to the national championship game.
Painter has advanced to the second week of the tournament seven times: in 2009, 2010, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2024.
Painter and the Boilermakers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament nearly every season dating back to 2007. The lone exceptions are a two-year dip from 2012-14, as well as 2020, when the tournament was canceled.
