Purdue head coach Matt Painter has a 19-15 career record in the NCAA Tournament. The Boilermakers are now through to the 2024 Sweet 16 after a dominant March 24 win over Utah State.
Last year, Painter and the Boilermakers lost to Fairleigh Dickinson in the first round of the 2023 tournament. It was the among the biggest upsets in March Madness history.
In his 20 full seasons as a Division I head coach, Painter has made the NCAA Tournament 16 times, 15 at Purdue and once at Southern Illinois.
Purdue has been upset by higher seeds in six of its last 11 appearances. Painter has made one Elite Eight during his time at Purdue, in 2019. He has now advanced to the second week of the tournament seven times: in 2009, 2010, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022, and 2024.
Painter and the Boilermakers have qualified for the NCAA Tournament nearly every season dating back to 2007. The lone exceptions are a two-year dip from 2012-14, as well as 2020, when the tournament was canceled.
