Daniel Jones has become one of the most controversial quarterback names in the NFL.ย

Immediately after the Duke star was drafted at No. 6 overall in 2019, the talking heads declared that he was overdrafted and closer to a project than a plug-and-play starter. The war over Jonesโ€™ talent level has been roaring ever since.

The 2022 season was the highlight of Jonesโ€™ career. Facing a contract year, Jones helped the Giants earn their first playoff berth since 2016, where New York promptly won at Minnesota 31-24. It was the Giantsโ€™ first postseason win since the 2011 Super Bowl championship, and Jones contributed as a surprisingly effective dual threat.ย

The result? A reactionary contract extension worth more than $150 million.ย

Unfortunately, 2023 was a resurgent year for Jones skeptics, as Jones was both ineffective and injured. He failed to rank inside PFFโ€™s top 20 NFL quarterback grades for the season, and New York tumbled back toward the bottom of the NFC.ย

As usual, the reality is somewhat mixed on Jones. He probably was overdrafted, and itโ€™s hard to envision the Giants ever making a true run at the NFC championship game with Jones as the lead man.ย

Still, football is a team game, and the front office has rarely surrounded Jones with the kind of talent that other good quarterbacks have. Perhaps rookie receiver Malik Nabers will help Jones keep the New York Giantsโ€™ odds in the top end of the NFL futures market.ย
