Now that the sale of the Washington Commanders is official, NFL fans have dozens of new questions about new owner Josh Harris and his sizable ownership group.

Who Purchased the Washington Commanders?

Former owner Dan Snyder sold the Washington Commanders to a group of investors led by billionaire Josh Harris. Harris became the general partner after the NFL owners unanimously approved the sale on July 20, 2023.

How Much is Josh Harris Worth?

According to Bloomberg’s index of billionaires, Josh Harris is worth $8.69 billion.

Josh Harris Net Worth

Though Harris got his start in private equity after graduating from UPenn’s Wharton business school in 1986, much of his current net worth is tied to his ownership of multiple sports franchises.

Josh Harris Owns What Teams?

Prior to purchasing the Washington Commanders, Harris was already the acting partner for the Philadelphia 76ers and the New Jersey Devils. He is also a general partner of Crystal Palace, an English football club.

Who Are the New Owners of the Washington Commanders?

Harris led a group of investors that includes the following people:

  • Magic Johnson, NBA Hall of Fame basketball player and media personality
  • Mitchell Rales, billionaire businessman
  • David Blitzer, business partner to Harris at HBSE
  • Lee Ainslie, hedge fund investor
  • Alejandro Santo Domingo, billionaire financier
  • Eric Schmidt, former CEO of Google
  • Mark Ein, founder and CEO of Capitol Investment Corp. and Venturehouse Group

In total, the Harris investment group that purchased the commanders includes 20 limited partners – more than any other current NFL ownership group.

Where Do the Washington Commanders Play?

The Washington Commanders currently play at FedEx Field in Landover, Maryland, though there have been rumors about a potential venue change in recent years.

Washington Commanders Previous Name

Historically, the NFL franchise in Washington had played as the Washington Redskins since their arrival in the nation’s capital in 1937.

In 2020, the team announced it would temporarily play as the Washington Football Team while it picked a new name that was less controversial.

Washington began playing as the Commanders in 2022, but even that name may be short-lived as the new Harris ownership group has intimated that a third name change could be in the works.
