  • The 2023 Ryder Cup is Sept. 25-Oct. 1 in Rome.
  • Below are updated team rankings for the United States.

The Ryder Cup will return in 2023 from Rome, Italy, where the United States will look to defend its win in 2021, as they crushed Europe, 19-9.

As of May 2023, Ryder Cup odds have the United States favored at -175, while Europe is +175 and a tie is +1200. Although, Europe has won the most Ryder Cups of late, winning four of the last six editions.

Over the three days, the two 12-player teams will compete in a few different formats.

Each of the first two days includes one four-match session of fourball and one four-match session of foursomes. The final day is reserved for 12 singles matches. Fourball is better known as best ball, while foursomes is better known as alternate shot.

Players can earn points toward making the United States team through the BMW Championship on Aug. 20, 2023

Below are the updated rankings following the PGA Championship.

How is United States Ryder Cup Team Picked?

The top six players on the points list after the BMW Championship (Aug. 20) make the team. Then, captain Zach Johnson will make six captain’s picks.

How Are United Ryder Cup Points Determined?

Players earn one point per $1,000 earned at each tournament. The winner of the Masters, PGA Championship, U.S. Open, and British Open earn two points per $1,000 earned.

Points began to be earned in 2022 and will continue through the BMW Championship.

Potential United States Ryder Cup Captain Picks

  • Jordan Spieth
  • Sam Burns
  • Justin Thomas
  • Collin Morikawa
  • Tony Finau
  • Sahith Theegala
  • Keegan Bradley
  • Wyndham Clark
  • Kurt Kitayama
  • Dustin Johnson

Those players are all currently not inside the top six in terms of points, so they would need to be captain’s picks. Historically, the captain’s picks are determined by experience and who is playing well of late.

Often, some players do not qualify via points but have plenty of experience and deserve to make the team. Other times, players are playing extremely well toward the end of the summer but need more points to qualify. Given their recent form, they are also deserving.

United States captain Zach Johnson will make his selections following the 2023 Tour Championship.
