The PGA Tour will make the short trip from Kapalua, Hawaii, to Honolulu and Waialae Country Club for the Sony Open in Hawaii, Jan. 9-12.

It is not a PGA Tour signature event, but several big names are in the field, including Hideki Matsuyama, who is coming off his win at The Sentry.

He has the best odds to win this week at +900.

The two courses couldnโ€™t be any more different as the Plantation Course is wide open with large fairways and greens, whereas Waialae is narrow with small fairways and greens.

Matsuyama set a PGA Tour scoring record, finishing the week at 35-under. That likely wonโ€™t be the case this week, as the winning score has been 17 and 18-under the last two years.

Last week, the longer hitters were rewarded, and this week, it should favor the shorter, straighter hitters.

I will focus on course history and proximity from 125-200 yards when making my golf betting picks this week. Bogey avoidance and success in short courses will be metrics Iโ€™ll consider as well.

Sony Open in Hawaii Prediction

Hideki Matsuyama is expected to win the Sony Open in Hawaii with a 10% implied probability, according to betting markets. Corey Conners is next at 5.88%

Implied probability is the overall chance of a potential outcome in relation to the odds.

Sony Open in Hawaii Best Bets

Corey Conners Outright Winner (+1600)

Conners has a solid best course history at the Sony Open in Hawaii. The Canadian has been extremely steady, as taking out last yearโ€™s T-57 finish, he has four straight finishes T-12 or better, including a T-3 in 2019.

Heโ€™s coming off a great start to the year with a T-5 finish at The Sentry.ย

In addition, he fits the trend of players playing at Kapalua the week before having more success than players who did not. In the last eight years, five of the eight winners played in The Sentry the week prior. In addition, last year, eight of the top-10 finishers played the previous week.

Conners is too good of a player to have only two career PGA Tour wins.

Byeong Hun An Top-10 Finish (+240)

Albeit a small sample size, An has done extremely well at this event. In two starts, he lost in a playoff a year ago and finished T-12 in 2023. Like Conners, he played last week and finished T-32.ย

An is coming off an extremely good 2024 season, where he logged five top-10 finishes in 22 starts. His strong play earned him a spot on the International Presidentโ€™s Cup team.ย

A top-20 bet for An could also be considered.

Chris Kirk Top-20 Finish (+200)

Coming off a disappointing T-44 finish at The Sentry, where he was defending his title a week ago, this is a week to get good value on the 39-year-old.

Kirk has a tremendous record at Waialae, including a T-2 and a solo third finish in the last four years. Overall, heโ€™s finished no worse than T-27 over that stretch. While last week wasnโ€™t his best, he did start with an opening 74, so he improved as the week went on.ย
