- Nick Dunlap, an amateur, won for the first time since 1991 on the PGA Tour.
It was a unique week on the PGA Tour for The American Express in La Quinta, California.
The event was at PGA West, which has three courses โ Pete Dye SC, Nicklaus TC, La Quinta CC. Players played all three courses for the first three rounds, and then the final round was exclusively at the Pete Dye SC.
Even though it wasn’t a PGA Tour signature event, plenty of top players were in the field, including Scottie Scheffler, Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele.
In the end, amateur Nick Dunlap was the winner by one shot. He became the first amateur to win on the PGA Tour since 1991 (Phil Mickelson).
Dunlap, 20, is a sophomore at the University of Alabama.
The tournament had a purse of $8.4 million.
